EXHIBITION AGAINST NUCLEAR TESTS
On January 10 at 7.30 pm at the “Ámbito Cultural de El Corte Inglés”, Alicante (Federico Soto street, number 1), the exhibition “Students of the World against Nuclear Tests” was inaugurated. It is the result of the collaboration between the foundation Peace and Cooperation and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban- Treaty Organization of the United Nations (CTBTO), which has the support of the Permanent Representation of Spain before the International Organizations in Vienna.
There have been 70 works from 10 countries participating in the world school art contest that show the commitment of students to the complete abolition of nuclear tests and that aims to raise public awareness about this vital issue for security and peace of our planet.
Beatriz Arias, the beautiful and dynamic person in charge of the office of the Cultural Field of the “Corte Inglés” of Alicante, opened the act with brief words of introduction to let her guests enjoy the presentation of this exhibition that advocates the end of the nuclear tests.
The exhibition, which attracted the attention of the thousand participants of the CTBTO Science and Technology Conference, was set up with originality and pleasure by Ms. Georgia Hristea, the international relations officer of the Madrid Foundation.
Beatriz handed me the microphone and thanked “El Corte Inglés” for our traditional January exhibition that reaches its seventh edition and the Alicante Town Hall for its support in the person of the Councilor for Culture.
Madrid journalist Maria Jesús Alfaya read the message from the Technical Secretary of CTBTO, the Dr. Lassina Zerbo, addressed to the Alicante Town Hall and to Peace and Cooperation.
He congratulated the organizers and
“all the artists who featured in this
exhibit.”… “I am convinced that art can help us build awareness of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty”… “Art appeals to us personally; it touches us on an emotional and aesthetic level. It can open new doors and let us see issues in a new light”.
While reading the speech, his text was projected on a screen in English, with the works and the names of young artists from all over the world.
The Honorary Consul of Greece in the“Comunidad Valenciana”, Mr. Manuel Serrano, was glad to see a great Cypriot work exposed and recalled that last year, in the company of the Ambassador of Cyprus, H.E. Ms. Koula Sophianou, she watched a first prize from the island of Aphrodite.
The Councilor for Culture, Mr. Antonio Manresa, highlighted the commitment to Peace and Cooperation for the purposes of the United Nations and recalled that he had been inaugurating this art show in the service of peace for five years, of which this year is of great importance in the light of the hostilities of the Persian Gulf.
He welcomed the work done by CTBTO and Peace and Cooperation by organizing school events that enliven the interest of youth for a safe and peaceful planet.
For the seventh consecutive year, this exhibition of Peace and Cooperation is part of the calendar of activities of the “Ámbito Cultural de El Corte Inglés” de Alicante and, of course, it is also a date of meetings with friends from Alicante, this beautiful tourist city and capital of a flourishing activity of the leather and shoe industry whose motto is “Alacant is the millor terreta del món” and which has in the new Exhibition Hall of the “Ámbito Cultural de El Corte Inglés” a remarkable center of literary acts and artistic works.
Known faces of Alicante social life and a toast with a good cava ended a very endearing evening.
Peace and Cooperation thanks Eva, Ernesto, Manuel and Don Vicente for their constant support. My friend, Mr. Manresa promised to send the 2020 Peace and Cooperation School Award “The future of children and youth. The OSCE for youth” to schoolchildren and teachers from Alicante.
For her part, the gentle Beatriz Arias, set the date for the OSCE / Peace and Cooperation exhibition from January 15 to 31, 2021.
