Every year, on the 25th of March, the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, gives the opportunity to honor and remember those who suffered and died at the hands of this brutal slavery system. The goal of this International Day is also to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice at present.

For more than 400 years, more than 15 million men, women and children were victims of the deplorable transatlantic slave trade, one of the darkest chapters in human history.

With the aim of permanently honouring the victims, a monument has been created at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, which is named the “ark of return”. It was created by Rodney Leon, an American architect of Haitian origin.
