On December 12, 2012, the United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution in which it urged countries to accelerate progress towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The idea was to ensure that all people, everywhere, had access to quality and affordable health services, as a priority for international development. On December 12, 2017, pursuant to resolution 72/138, the United Nations proclaimed December 12 as the Universal Health Coverage Day.

The Universal Health Coverage day aims to raise awareness of the need for strong and resilient health systems and multi-stakeholder universal health coverage. On December 12 of each year, CSU advocates raise their voices to tell the stories of the millions of people who still await access to healthcare; defend what we have achieved so far; call on leaders to make bigger and better investments in health; and encourage diverse groups to make commitments that help bring the world closer to CSU by 2030.
