In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed August 29 as International Day Against Nuclear Tests. This day aims to raise awarenessthe dangers and tragic consequences for individuals and the environment of nuclear weapons testing, and to highlight the need to end them.

In this sense, the international day against nuclear tests wishes to achieve, through the organization of conferences, colloquia, exhibitions and publications, the acceleration of the ban on nuclear tests, and in particular by ensuring the entry into force of the comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty, which was drafted in 1996 but never entered into force.
